New 20 Year Led Light Bulbs Could Be Released This Year

Posted By: Matthew

New LED light bulbs that could last for more 20 years and use a lot less energy than current light bulbs could go on sale this year.
US giant General Electric, Dutch firm Philips and Sylvania have all showcased their new lighting products at the Light Fair industry conference in Las Vegas. The LEDs (light-emitting diodes) could be used to replace filament bulbs as they produce as much light as a 100-watt incandescent alternative.
The bulbs from all three companies are said to be able to last for more than 20 years if used for around three hours a day and consume only about a quarter of the energy when compared to regular light bulbs.

The Philips and Sylvania bulbs are due to go on sale later this year, whilst the GE model is set for release early next year.

The UK’s Energy saving trust (EST), which measured performance of over 4,000 LED light fittings, claim that LEDs could present an opportunity for massive energy saving and reduced costs.

“There are so many benefits [to LEDs]”, said James Russell, EST’s technical development manager.

“They can be smaller, brighter; it is one of those rare technologies where the trial has shown it performs better than the lighting system it is replacing but, at the same time, uses less energy.”
According to Mr Russell, LED light fittings are more efficient than filament bulbs because less energy is lost through heat. He continued: “LEDs are the most efficient light source currently available and are increasingly used in domestic, commercial and automotive applications. “They can last tens of thousands of hours compared to 1,000 hours for typical incandescent lamps. This is due to the use of solid state technology – they have no moving parts, no glass and no filament breakage.”
