Expert advice to help you with your spotlight choices
The subject of spotlights can be a bit of a minefield and often can be a lot more complex that it might at first seem. There is also potential for making large mistakes or backwards steps when selecting spotlights. For example, spotlights are often considered an ideal replacement for the old style fluorescent tube ceiling lights (the type that take T8 tubes), as you can quite easily purchase a ceiling spotlight fitting that fills the space left behind by the fluorescent fitting. However, the type of light produced by these two types of light sources is very different and you may well find yourself changing from a bright and even light to one that is bright in some areas but casting shadows in others.
Spotlights are ideal for lighting areas where you need to focus the pool of light on a subject, maybe a painting or an ornament or you simply want to wash a lot of light down your walls. They are also ideal for work areas such as sewing or soldering as you will get an intense and focused light right where you need it.
