Choosing Children's Lighting

Posted By: Matthew

One area of home lighting that's quite often overlooked is illumination for the bedrooms of the younger members of the household. And if you're expecting, it's perhaps one thing to give some thought to ahead of the birth.

But children's lighting will play a key role in creating a cosy environment in your youngsters' bedrooms, in which they will feel happy and secure.

Here are a few pointers to help.

Are Fairy Lights A Suitable Alternative to Conventional Childrens Lights?

As one potential alternative to a bedside lamp or night light, consider stringing up a set of fairly lights along a wall or bedstead. This will create a comforting glow while still looking cool enough to satisfy the most style-conscious older-child.

If you go for this option, stick to LED lights, since these never become too hot to touch.

Getting the Right Combination

When it comes to children's lights, the right combination of fixtures is essential. By having a number of varied sources of illumination, you can have a space that suits different activities at different times of day, from playing or sleeping to, for old children, school homework.

Start with ceiling lights. Think pendant lights in bold colours or novelty designs to stimulate and fire the imagination. Of course, if your child is old enough to be focusing on a close task at a table, from jigsaws or models to computer work or studying, a good desk lamp is vital.

Make sure there's no glare on the laptop or PC screen, and consider funky designs from planes to animals so kids will be likelier to remember to turn the light on.

And if your son or daughter is going to be a bookworm in bed, or in a particular chair, have a good quality reading light.

Darker corners can also be brightened with a floor or table lamp, especially if your children don't like these gloomy spots. Equally, accent lighting can pull the eye to shelves or wall decoration and highlight their favourite things.

Finally, for a nursery, low wattage lights could be easier on your baby's eyes, and on your own, during that middle of the night feeds or nappy changes.
