Mains voltage spotlights are still a popular choice in homes all over the world. They are commonly used in kitchens and can be a good light source for tasks in that area of the home.
Spotlights produce focussed pools of light, so it's important to position them in the optimal direction, so you aren't dazzled by the output, but also to ensure you have the light focused mainly on the area you're aiming to illuminate. If you're looking to illuminate an area larger than the pool produced by a single spotlight, then it's important to plan not only the number of luminaries but also the fitted position of them. In cases where you have multiple spotlights, it's advisable to overlap the pools of light, this will help to reduce shadowing and give for a much more even spread.

For example on a ceiling light, they are available with anything from one to more than ten spot heads on each one. Clearly the bigger the room then the more spots you're going to need, it's vital to ensure that you have enough heads to cover the area you wish to illuminate.
Wall spots look fantastic when illuminated and help to create a real feature of your walls. They are also perfect for reading and you can even set them at the correct light angle very easily.
Floor and table lamps are also very useful for reading or any other household project that needs good strong focused light.
LED variations are readily available if energy consumption is high on your list of priorities. You don't even have to purchase dedicated LED spots, with so much choice in retrofit LED bulbs available you can select from one of the many halogen spots available, say for example the GU10 spotlight and retrofit LED bulbs into it. The process of retrofitting LED bulbs couldn't be more simple as they are installed and fit in exactly the same way of the halogen ones they were designed to replace. The halogen versions normally come in 50w or 35w versions but there are many energy efficient options available that produce the same light levels as these. LEDs have similar outputs but you can also choose warm or cool white for the colour temperature, an option that is generally not available when you use halogen bulbs.
Some wall spot lights do have an option to have an on/off switch included. Normally either a rocker type or pull chord. This enables you to have full control of each light as you are able to switch each one on or off independently of the rest.
