do they need a protective cover over the top?
if so how much weight can they withstand?

A1: No the LED's are not coloured, they are daylight white. No need for a protective cover as they IP68 rated and completely watertight, ideal for outdoors and bathroom. They are only designed for walking over, so patio and pathways. Not suitable for driveways.
